The funds are part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act and will be matched by industry funding, for a total public-private investment worth over $8 billion, according to the announcement.

A range of technologies will be supported with the new funding, including strategies to help consumers reduce demand, to make the grid more reliable with improved monitoring, distribution and control systems, and to make it more compatible with distributed renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.

In total, utilities receiving the funds will install more than 1 million in-home displays, 170,000 smart thermostats, and 175,000 other load control devices that help consumers reduce their energy use. The federal stimulus funds also aim to expand the market for smart washers, dryers, and dishwashers, according to the announcement.
