Rosemead, Calif. — Southern California Edison (SCE), one of the country’s largest electric utilities, has signed a contract to buy solar technology from SunPower Corp. for generating up to 200 megawatts.

SCE plans to install, own and operate 250 megawatts of solar generating capacity, most of it on large warehouse rooftops. The large one- to two-million-watt solar installations will be connected directly to neighborhood distribution circuits where the leased rooftops are located, the company said.

The order for photovoltaics from SunPower will represent about 80% of the solar power capacity needed for the utility’s installation program.

SCE is buying SunPower’s T5 Solar Roof Tile product, which integrates a solar panel, frame and roof mounting system in to a single unit, which reduces installation time and costs, the company said.

Southern California Edison serves a population of nearly 14 million through about 4.9 million customer accounts in a 50,000-square-mile service area in central, coastal and southern California.

Founded in 1985 and publicly traded, SunPower had revenue last year of about $500 million.
