Watertown, Mass. — A123 Systems, a Watertown-based developer and manufacturer of advanced lithium ion batteries and systems, has signed an agreement with the vehicle manufacturer Navistar to develop battery systems for electric vehicles.

Navistar’s commercial electric vehicle, scheduled for launch this year, has a gross vehicle weight of 12,100 pounds and a payload capacity of two tons. The vehicle will be assembled in Wakarusa, Indiana.

A123′s battery pack will allow the Navistar EV to travel about 100 miles on pure electricity before needing to be recharged. The battery pack will be capable of a rapid charge, depending on the power of the charging system applied, according to the announcement.

It is expected that the new battery systems will be manufactured in A123′s Livonia, Mich. facility, scheduled to open this month, the company said.
